Welcome to the World Year of Physics 2005 newsletter. You're receiving this message because you signed up to be on the list at our website or at an APS, AAPT or other scientific meeting. This newsletter, containing information about the upcoming World Year of Physics 2005, is distributed approximately every six weeks.
1. United Nations declares 2005 "International Year of Physics"
On June 10, 2004, the UN General Assembly officially declared 2005 the International Year of Physics. The UN declaration invited people of all nations to reflect on the importance of science, both in their daily lives and in the struggle to answer fundamental questions about nature and the universe.
Currently, there are no plans to officially change the name of the year, however, this question is being considered by the World Year of Physics 2005 International Steering Committee.
2. U.S. House of Representatives Passes WYP Resolution
The U.S. House of Representatives officially declared its support for the goals and ideals of the World Year of Physics in 2005 through a resolution passed July 7, 2004. Rep. Vernon Ehlers (R- MI) and Rep. Brian Baird (D - WA) introduced the resolution, which the House passed without objection. A similar bill is pending in the Senate.
3. Honor Society Kicks-off World Year of Physics Celebration; online now registration available
Sigma Pi Sigma--the physics honor society--kicks off the World Year of Physics Celebration with its Quadrennial Congress to be held October 15-16, 2004 in Albuquerque, NM. The Congress, themed "Heritage and Promise," boasts a superb line-up of speakers and events, so expect to meet up with long-time friends, researchers on the cutting edge, and the fresh faces of the physics community. A special tour of the Trinity Site, where the first atomic bomb was detonated, will be offered on October 14.
4. 2005 Event Finder now online!
The WYP2005 Online Event Finder is now available. We want to hear about YOUR World Year of Physics event in the United States. Add your open house, public lecture, lab tour, physics demonstrations to our online event finder so others in your area (and around the country) can find out about your events.
5. WYP Speakers Program debuts
Is your school or organization looking for a special speaker? Let us help. Request a speaker through the WYP Speakers Program. Organized by the American Physical Society's Topical Group on Gravitation and the Forum on the History of Physics, the speakers program will be able to provide speakers on Einstein's curved spacetime theory of gravitation and historical aspects of Einstein's life. These speakers are not only researchers and scholars; they are also scientists who have a knack for explaining to the public Einstein's ideas and their impact.
6. AAPT offers WYP grants
Do you want to celebrate WYP? Do you need financial support to make it happen? The American Association of Physics Teachers has two funding opportunities available.
The AAPT's Bauder Fund will offer a minimum of 20 grants of up to $1,000 each for WYP outreach activities. Deadline is December 31, 2004.
The AAPT's Innovative High School Physics Teacher Grant Program offers grants of $100-$500 to high school teachers with innovative ways of sharing information about physics and WYP with the school, the community and the surrounding areas. Total funding for the program is $1,000. The number of grants awarded will be determined by the dollar amount of each grant.
